Oakland's Best Dining - Belotti Ristorante e Bottega

Belotti Ristorante e Bottega in Rockridge (Oakland). Is the best Italian food I've eaten in the East Bay. Wow! Delicious! Hard to get in without a reservation, but worth the wait. @belottirb

Chef Michele Belotti servesup traditional Italian cooking with a modern touch. In 2017, San Francisco magazine voted Belotti for "Best Bay Area Pasta" and 2 more awards, "Best Trattoria" and "Top Italian Restaurants of the World 2017" from the prestigious Gambero Rosso magazine.

The all handmade pasta menu selections are numerous and the comforting ambience adds to the exemplary dining experience. For main entrees think 13-hour slow cooked Stone Valley Farm suckling pig or 5-hour braised flat iron, Italian organic polenta. I appreciate the care and attention to simply prepared Italian cuisine for an impressive and delectable dining experience.

Oakland's Coffee Shops! My Fave 5!

Coffee Shops are today's answer to socializing in bars and offer every brew style, workspace, entertainment and act as a community gathering place. A great way to get to know your neighbors!

Here are 5 of my favorite Oakland spots to stop a grab a cup or to whip out my laptop and write an offer for a home! Being out and about energizes...and so does the caffeine:))

Cole Coffee, 307 63rd St., Oakland
Open for nearly 30 years they are a busy spot with a comfy sofa vibe and outdoor seating. Bonus! They roast and brew their own coffee.

Timeless Coffee, 4252 Piedmont Ave, Oakland
Vegan Alert! Serving breakfast and lunch dishes that are all vegan. Also roasting in-house, their coffees are made to order. It's great chillaxing hang out.

Blue Bottle Coffee, 300 Webster St, Oakland
Their coffee brand has spread and you are beginning to see them everywhere. Think beans roasted within 48 hours. Lots of modern communal seating with an open feel.

Modern Coffee, 411 13th St AND 381 19th Street, Oakland
They call themselves a coffee tap room. With plenty of workspace, the quaint shops offer owner "coffee's we love right now" with beans for sale from other roastery's. Get your work on it the heart of it all!

Farley’s East, 33 Grand Ave, Oakland
Located in a parklet, you can drink your brew inside or in the great outdoors. Farley collaborates with local non-profits to donate proceeds each month. A great local feel in this neighborhood coffee shop.

Which is your favorite coffee shop? Where do you dig in and get a little work done, or just grab a cup and go? Have a favorite brew method? Remember you don't have to drink coffee exclusively...enjoy the baked goods, tea and other offerings at our vibrant Oakland Coffee destinations!

THE SCOOP! East Bay Living Pick's by Patty Rogers

Tending toward dining out, I like to make sure I find restaurants that serve whole foods, using organic non-GMO ingredients with produce from local farmers and who source their meat and fish. Gather Restaurant in Berkeley does all of that and more.

Our values run deep. In daily conversation with our farmers and ranchers, we utilize rare heirloom varietals and foraged ingredients to create dishes that are as intriguing and satisfying to carnivores as they are to vegans and those with dietary restrictions. The whole animals we source are butchered in house and like our eggs and dairy sources, come from local, sustainable ranches focused on heritage breeds.
— Gather Restaurant

Expect small plates, salads, main dishes, delectable pizzas and creative deserts like Halvah Sundae with pistachio & rosewater ice creams, orange caramel & cherries. Serving Lunch and Dinner 7 days a week and weekend brunch, experience Executive Chef Anthony Lee's changing micro-seasonal menus and specials.

Oakland and Berkeley Walking Neighborhoods

Head for the Flats: East Bay Home Buyers Want To Walk

Remember when homes in the Berkeley and Oakland hills commanded premium prices and multiple offers because of their quiet suburban appeal and spectacular Bay and City views? Well, a new era of buyers have been flipping that East Bay home sales trend on its head. Now the flats are where it’s at, in part, because they are so walkable.

Hot neighborhoods include Bushrod, Temescal and Rockridge – all easy walks to BART stations, bus stops, schools and booming commercial districts with farm-to-table dining, bookstores, craft brew pubs, funky and upscale shops, gourmet markets and children’s stores.

Younger people moving from The City want a more urban feel and amenities without the parking headaches. Retired baby boomers don’t want to drive and have time to enjoy urban amenities. Easy access to the arts and theater in downtown Berkeley is a big draw.

Nationally, more than half of millennials and 46 percent of boomers prefer walkable communities, according to a survey by the American Planning Association.

Cafes and shops along College Avenue are within easy walking distance for Rockridge residents.

Where else is it hot to be flat?

Bushrod: This north Oakland neighborhood was named the country’s hottest housing market by Redfin in January because of peak buyer interest. Bushrod’s charm includes its namesake park and easy access to Ashby and MacArthur BART stations.

Northbrae: North Berkeley’s most BARTable neighborhood sits between Berkeley’s famous “Gourmet Ghetto” and the Solano Avenue shops. But with Monterey Market and Gioa Pizza, residents don’t even have to go that far.

Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto” is just steps away. If only you could walk into Chez Panise without reservations …

Temescal: One of Oakland’s oldest neighborhoods, Temescal is centered on Telegraph Avenue. Oakland’s vibrant neighborhood draws hipsters and young families to its inspiring restaurants, nearby shops, cafes and popular Farmers’ Market.

Rockridge: Walk to BART, trendy restaurants and retail. The area’s popularity isn’t new, but has reached new heights. In April, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that “Rockridge Dump Receives 19 Offers, Sells for Quarter-Million Over Asking.”

San Pablo Park: This changing part of southwest Berkeley is attracting more families, artists and musicians. The amenities include Berkeley Bowl and dynamic restaurants on San Pablo Avenue. The playing fields, playground, tennis courts and community center draw neighbors to the park for all kinds of activities. And, of course, there’s Eugene Tssui’s Fish House, described by Berkeleyside as the “least-expected and probably the most-photographed architectural design in Berkeley.”

El Cerrito: More families are considering this part of Contra Costa County for the conveniences, including El Cerrito shopping plaza, a BART station, the Ohlone Greenway, restaurants and a revitalized portion of San Pablo Avenue.

Westbrae: The Berkeley neighborhood has easy access to Gilman Street for shopping and dining (the highly acclaimed Lalime’s and Westbrae Biergarten are here). It’s home to strollers and coffee seekers in the mornings and craft beer aficionados in the afternoons. Westbrae also boasts a beautiful community garden and the Ohlone Greenway.

If you live in the flats and are considering selling, now is the obviously time for East Bay home sales. Redfin studied how much walkability is worth when buying or selling a home and found that one Walk Score point can increase the price of a home by an average of $3,250 or 0.9 percent.

That holds true elsewhere in East Bay home sales, even though walkability is harder to come by on the other side of the Caldecott Tunnel. Expect to sell at a higher price per square foot in foot-friendly neighborhoods in Lafayette (the Trail area and parts of Happy Valley),  Walnut Creek (Saranap and Parkmead) and Danville (Westside).
